This is Taylor's first solo release in six years, following a series of cross-cultural, transgenerational duets with Carrie Rodriguez (who provides harmonies here). The first disc, Unglorious Hallelujah, is more topical and frequently darker, while Red Red Rose, the second disc, is lighter and more saturated with love songs. There's a thin line between serendipity and slapdash, and it occasionally seems that Taylor feels 4/5(4).

The latest album from Chip Taylor is actually a double disc: one disc of more carefully crafted works (Unglorious Hallelujah), and one of more spur-of-the-moment creations (Red, Red Rose & Other Songs of Love, Pain & Destruction). Both are quite good, straightforward singer/songwriter-esque pieces with a heavy dose of blues and folk mixed in.7/

For the first time on CD, Raven Presents a definitive multi-label compilation from Chip Taylor. here are 23 essential tracks culled from eight albums originally released by Buddah, Warner, Columbia and Capitol - a fertile period that found him accepted as a peer of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and John Prine.
